Day 6 - Abstract Painting - 6 Day Art Challenge MMVCE

Day 6. Make an Abstract Painting.   Abstract art is my favourite style to create when I feel stuck or not inspired to make my usual portraits. I find them freeing and, to be honest, harder to create than my own style of artwork since I am not an abstract artist. I also find new symbolism for my portraits when I create abstract art. My favourite artist of all time is Joan Mitchell, she was an abstract artist. Her work inspires me because of her use of lines and colour. It is truly beautiful. Abstract art is art that doesn't depict...

Day 5 - Realistic Pencil Drawing - 6 Day Art Challenge MMVCE

Day 5.  Make a realistic pencil drawing.   Today's activity is not necessarily a fun one but it definitely can be a satisfying exercise. Realistic pencil drawing is a classical technique in which we draw an object as is, looking at light and shadow and how these two create a 3 dimensional look on this object. Shading is a technique we use to create the 3D effect on a realistic drawing, but for this we need to observe the light and know where the light source is coming from.  Realistic pencil drawing is something you can train yourself to do...

Day 4 - Collage - 6 Day Art Challenge MMVCE

Day 4.  Make a collage.   Collage is a technique in which you cut images, photographs, fabric or paintings and glue them onto a surface creating a visual composition. Other materials like leaves, flowers, thread, drawings, notes, (and etc...) can also be used to create collages. If you have done this exercise before you know how fun it is to create them. This is a challenge for everyone, no need to be an artist to do it. Today's activity shares a similar process with the activity from day 1 (moodboard), as you might use the same technique to create your collage. A collage...

Day 3 - Single Line Drawing - 6 Day Art Challenge MMVCE

Day 3.  Make a single line drawing.   This is a typical art class exercise and a very popular way of drawing nowadays. The challenge is drawing an object without lifting your pencil and capturing its' shape with just one line. It is a minimal way of drawing an object and portraying its' essence. Anyone who went to art school or took drawing classes will be familiar with this exercise. As you probably know, Pablo Picasso was the most famous artist to ever make these kind of drawings. His single line drawings continue to inspire artists including myself and many artists have adopted...

Day 1 - Moodboard - 6 Day Art Challenge MMVCE

Day 1. Make a Moodboard. We will start the challenge with one of my favourite things to make – moodboards. I find this especially helpful as a visual research technique, to find inspiration and direction when creating. This exercise is not only for creative people, it is for everyone. Making moodboards is fairly simple: cut out images you like from magazines and arrange them in a way that you find aesthetically pleasing. You can select images that have a common theme like colour, prints, textures, shapes, objects or go even more abstract with it by selecting images intuitively. If you...
